Job Description

Really Useful Media is a full-service, boutique video production company based in Brooklyn. We work on location both in New York City as well as around the globe.

Founded in 2007, our agency was created to shed light on the world-changing work being done by impact-driven organizations globally. Our videos help clients engage donors, raise awareness, secure funding, break attendance records, and make audiences laugh and cry. Our work has appeared in museums, festivals, award shows, and national publications, including The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Responsibilities

The production assistant is a growth-track role that will play a vital role in supporting production needs and client requests. Responsibilities may include:

  • Setting up equipment, including cameras, tripods, microphones, and lights, in collaboration with crew members and venue A/V technicians
  • Prepping equipment lists and packing and stowing gear for productions
  • Load-in and load-out, including traveling between our studio in Brooklyn and various production locations throughout New York City, as needed
  • Camera operation on single and multi-camera events, with direction from an onsite producer
  • Post-production media management, including footage ingest, B roll logging, and transcript reviews
  • Archival asset management of client hard drives
  • Pre-production logistics, such as drafting production kits, creating schedules, prepping event graphics, and responding to clients’ technical questions
  • Testing and integrating new production equipment
  • Providing operations/admin support, e.g., scheduling, supply ordering

We are a small company, with many opportunities for cross-functioning roles and professional growth. This is a great position for a person who likes to take initiative, finds joy in problem-solving, and enjoys tackling both ambitious, complex projects and simple tasks on her/his/their to-do list.

Really Useful Media is guided by a core set of values around learning and knowledge sharing, integrity, social responsibility, and creative collaboration. Our clients work to improve our world through healthcare, scientific research, social justice, art and culture, racial equity, education, literature, design, affordable housing, and more. We look for an addition to our team who believes, as we do, that beautiful, well-told stories advance causes and change hearts and minds.

Qualifications

Strong candidates will have:

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Great attitude, and ability to work in diverse settings, from corporate to community events
  • Ability to take direction and receive feedback
  • Strong interest and ability to acquire new technical skills quickly
  • Experience creating basic graphic design assets, including proficiency in Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator, and/or Canva
  • Demonstrated ability to operate with grace, confidence, and professionalism in the fast-paced, often high-stress environment of live event production
  • Flexibility and availability to work evening/weekend schedules
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, see and focus on fine details from a distance, and distinguish color differences
  • Prior experience operating cameras for live events and performances
  • An interest in our clients’ work and actively supporting their social impact

The ideal candidates will also:

  • Have experience in multiple facets of production, including previous hands-on production experience in lighting, sound, and/or live streaming
  • Enjoy solving problems, taking initiative, and troubleshooting technical and aesthetic issues as they arise
  • Have experience with our most commonly used software tools, including Final Cut Pro, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Suite, and/or Airtable
  • Understand how to translate creative ideas into technical requirements

This is a full-time position that allows for some remote work, but requires regularly being onsite in our studio in Sunset Park (Industry City), Brooklyn and on location for client productions around New York City. Given the varied nature of event scheduling, the position requires flexibility and availability to work some evenings and weekends. We are committed to promoting work-life balance, even as the workday’s timing may vary.

The salary range for this position is $53,000-$59,000, dependent on experience. Really Useful
